Open Solar System Foundation (OSSF)

Advancing Planetary Data Access through AI and Collaboration


Vision


The OSSF provides access to a comprehensive suite of open planetary science datasets and open-source software tools designed to support open, interoperable, and collaborative research and economic activity across the Solar System. 


The Open Solar System Foundation (OSSF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting equitable access to planetary data and space resources by fostering innovation in Planetary Spatial Data Infrastructures (PSDIs). With NASA's open-source Planetary Data System (PDS) providing over 2 petabytes of open data, OSSF is committed to leveraging cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI), including Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPTs, to transform how humanity interacts with this invaluable resource.


Mission 

OSSF's mission is to revolutionize planetary data accessibility through structured PSDIs that are interoperable, scalable, and aligned with FAIR principles—Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. This initiative fosters a collaborative space economy, prioritizing public trust, data integrity, and transparency. AI-driven tools like the ongoing Open Solar System Intelligent Governance (OSSIG) GPT and the LUNAVERSE GPT project will empower simulation and modeling of Lunar activities, enhancing scientific exploration, mission planning, and sustainable resource utilization.


The Role of AI in Planetary Data Ecosystems

Harnessing AI, particularly LLMs, enables unprecedented advancements in planetary data workflows:

  • Data  Discoverability: AI enhances search and indexing across massive datasets, making complex planetary information readily accessible to researchers, policymakers, and the public.
  • Data Integration: GPT models interpret, integrate, and contextualize diverse datasets, from geospatial maps to mission archives, enabling cross-disciplinary insights.
  • Modeling and Simulation: Tools like LUNAVERSE GPT provide interactive, AI-supported environments to model Lunar missions and inform strategies for exploration and resource management.


Building Collaborative Frameworks

By embedding AI within PSDIs, OSSF envisions creating planetary data ecosystems that foster collaboration among scientists, engineers, policymakers, and the general public. These ecosystems will:

  • Streamline Data Usage: AI tools reduce the complexity of accessing and processing planetary datasets, supporting both novice users and domain experts.
